Back to School Supply Hunt Brings Families Together at Festival at Riva

The Back to School Supply Hunt at Festival at Riva drew an estimated 244 attendees on August 21, 2026, pairing complimentary backpacks with an interactive supply scavenger hunt across 10 participating merchants. The event also featured a Popsicle Social, Community Book Swap, and Lunchbox Decoration Station, driving foot traffic to center retailers while supporting local families ahead of the new school year.

Back-to-school season is equal parts exciting and exhausting for families juggling supply lists, new schedules, and shrinking budgets. At Festival at Riva, VVS Events & Marketing partnered with Rappaport to turn that stress into a celebration—the Back to School Supply Hunt.

The result? A packed sidewalk activation that gave families a reason to shop local, connect with their community, and kick off the school year with a little extra joy (and a lot of free supplies).

What happened at the Back to School Supply Hunt?

Held on Friday, August 21, 2026, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM, the event welcomed an estimated 244 guests to the sidewalk area beside Giant at Festival at Riva. Ten local merchants—including Lebanese Taverna, Buffalo Wild Wings, New Balance, Sport Clips, KidStrong, J Crew Factory, European Wax Center, Uncharted, PM Pediatric Urgent Care, and Vitamin Shoppe—opened their doors to host supply stops along the treasure hunt route.

The original two-day event plan was scaled back to a single evening after Thursday's activations were cancelled due to weather. The VVS team consolidated everything into Friday's slot, and the turnout proved the pivot paid off.

How did the school supply treasure hunt work?

The first 300 children received complimentary backpacks and a school supply hunt card. From there, families visited each of the 10 participating merchants to collect one of ten essential school supplies, turning a routine shopping list into a scavenger hunt through the center.

Once families completed the hunt, kids returned to Guest Services for a Popsicle Social and a raffle ticket, giving them a shot at winning one of two lunchboxes paired with a $50 Giant gift card.

What other activities were part of the event?

The treasure hunt wasn't the only draw. Festival at Riva rounded out the evening with:

  • Community Book Swap – Over 100 starter books were available for families to take home, encouraging summer reading habits to carry into the school year.

  • Lunchbox Decoration Station – The first 150 guests personalized their lunchboxes with self-adhesive patches, adding a creative, hands-on touch to the evening.

  • Live Music & PA Setup – A family-friendly soundtrack kept the energy up throughout the two-hour activation.

Leftover supplies didn't go to waste, either. VVS and Festival at Riva donated remaining backpacks and supplies to Nest4Us/Manna from Heaven's school supplies and backpack buddies program, which discreetly sends food home with children in need over the weekend.

Did the event drive foot traffic for merchants?

Yes. All 10 participating merchants hosted supply stops or storefront activations, giving families a direct reason to step inside stores they may not have otherwise visited that evening. Feedback from tenants reflected the value of that exposure:

"Thank you for making it so easy to participate by giving us the supplies! This was a great way to get families into our store. We didn't get any sales, but it's good awareness." – New Balance
"We love participating. It's how we do things here." – Buffalo Wild Wings
"We are glad people got to come by our location while a Parents Night Out was in session so they can learn that is a service we offer, even if you are not a member." – KidStrong

Guests were just as enthusiastic. One attendee shared, "Thank you all for coming and putting this event on every year. We really appreciate it and have so much fun," while another noted, "I love that you guys are doing this for the kids."

What made this event successful, and what's next?

Using VVS's Event Value Framework, the Back to School Supply Hunt earned a Value Index of 95, reflecting exceptional delivery across production, flow, media amplification, and overall guest experience. Based on estimated attendance and typical consumer lifetime value for the center, the event generated an estimated $24,400 in projected first-year retail impact, with a potential $122,000 in long-term consumer value.

Looking ahead, VVS is considering scaling supply distribution to the first 200 children and layering in additional entertainment options to build on this year's momentum—continuing to grow the event while keeping the experience personal and community-focused.
