PlayPalooza at Festival at Bel Air: A Day the Community Won't Forget

The parking lot near the pond at Festival at Bel Air looked nothing like a parking lot on June 20, 2026. Rock climbing walls, a gaming truck, carnival games, face painters, and a surprise visit from Bluey transformed the space into something closer to a neighborhood celebration than a shopping center event. That was PlayPalooza—and it delivered on every front.

From the energy in the air to the smiles on kids' faces, this inaugural event set a new benchmark for what community-driven programming can look like at a retail property. Here's a full recap of what happened, what worked, and what's coming next.

What Made PlayPalooza a Standout Event

Approximately 2,500 attendees showed up under sunny 87°F skies, filling the Festival at Bel Air with the kind of energy that's hard to manufacture and impossible to fake. Designed for families with children ages 2–12, the event offered something for every age and energy level.

The activity lineup was built for maximum engagement:

  • Rock Climbing Wall – One of the most popular attractions of the day, drawing participants of all ages

  • Gaming Truck – A crowd favorite that kept kids entertained and lines moving

  • Moon Bounces, Foam Parties & Toddler Zone – Purpose-built for the littlest attendees

  • Carnival Games & Prizes – Classic fun with a competitive edge

  • Children's Business Fair – Young entrepreneurs pitched and showcased their ideas, spotlighting local talent in a meaningful way

  • Face Painters & Mascots – Bluey made a special appearance that genuinely stopped the crowd

  • Touch-A-Truck Experience & DIY Tie-Dye T-Shirt Station – Hands-on, tactile activities that kept the experience fresh

And perhaps most meaningfully: the Butterfly Book Swap. Over 250 books were collected for the drive, turning a fun afternoon into a community contribution.

The Numbers That Tell the Story

Great events feel good. But they also produce data that speaks for itself.

What Guests and Merchants Were Saying

The feedback from attendees and merchants wasn't just positive—it was specific, which is always the more telling signal.

From guests:

"This was incredible for our family! We had so much fun and I can't believe it's all free."
"We are so excited we participated in this event! Our school has received so much exposure to meeting new families." — Primrose School

From merchants on-site:

"We had several birthday parties tell us they planned a party this weekend so that they could go to PlayPalooza too, so that was a win for us." — Chuck E. Cheese
"So many people do not know what we offer and today we were able to educate more people. I hope the word spreads." — X-Golf
"This was the perfect way to help introduce my business to the community." — The Formery
"Families love us (B-Dubs) and we saw plenty of them after the event." — Buffalo Wild Wings

When tenants are generating new business relationships because of an event, the ROI conversation becomes much simpler. That's the goal—and PlayPalooza delivered it.

What We're Building On

Every event teaches something, and PlayPalooza was no different. The venue footprint—positioned near the pond in the parking lot—was energetic and visible, but the space presented a constraint: it wasn't large enough to accommodate both food trucks and the gaming truck simultaneously. Taste of DC Food Truck and Ice Cream were ultimately not in attendance, which created an unexpected benefit for the on-site vendors selling sweet treats and beverages.

Going forward, here's what the data and experience point toward:

  • Expand the event footprint to accommodate a fuller vendor lineup alongside entertainment

  • Increase advance marketing to drive even stronger pre-event RSVP numbers

  • Explore sponsorship partnerships with family-oriented and local brands to offset costs and add production value

  • Diversify entertainment to continue raising the bar for future editions

Why This Matters Beyond the Day Itself

PlayPalooza wasn't just a fun afternoon—it was a demonstration of what happens when a property invests in its community intentionally. Families who attended are now connected to Festival at Bel Air in a way that goes beyond a routine shopping trip. Merchants who participated gained visibility with hundreds of new faces. And the Butterfly Book Swap gave the event a sense of purpose that resonated beyond the carnival games and climbing walls.
